sticks and stones and words
Recently I read a quote by Carl Upchurch. It was about his understanding of what life was like being born a black man in poverty. This is what he said about his school experience.
The white teachers brought their white values into the school – values that negated my world entirely. The message was subtle, but it was clear to me: everyone I respected and loved was considered ignorant, irresponsible, and good-for-nothing.
This quote has me thinking: How am I communicating with other people? Do I have subtle messages in my tone or in my questions? Do I act like I have it all figured out and everyone around me doesn’t?
I’ve come to the conclusion that the majority of society needs to change how we communicate with one another. Sticks and stones and words can hurt. But love casts out all fear and pain. It’s why and how when we were children, and more innocent, a kiss on our hurt knee would make it feel better. Speak with love.

Wow. Those are some tough thoughts. It really makes me think about being “all things to all people” a bit differently. I’m going to have think about this some more…
Just finished reading John Maxwell’s book, Everyone Communicates: Few Connect. A must for your reading list. The more I learn about the two….the more I realize why I did not connect. Yes, I agree, that anything filtered through the love sift comes out better.
Thanks Julia, Let me know your future thoughts on it. So great seeing you Sunday!
Mom, how about bringing that book to Tennessee when you come…
